Jean
Chérillat
Domaine
des Matelots
There are two branches of the
Chérillat family in Saulcet. On one side there is Philippe the coopérateur
and owner of Domaine de Chinière, which is marketed separately by the
Cave des Vignerons. Then there is Jean and his brother Claude, who remain
independent producers, although now in their 80s, it is Jean’s sons,
Claude and Vincent who run the domaine from their rustic looking cellar on
the road to Bransat.
Claude and Vincent represent the fifth generation and work 12.5 hectares
of vineyards, split between the communes of Saulcet, La Roche (the hamlet
above Bransat) and Verneuil-en-Bourbonnais. As for the wines, there is a
choice of one white, made up of a fairly classic blend of 80% Chardonnay
and 20% Tressallier which is clean and mineral but lacks flesh, a rather
thin rosé and a light paysan red, made from 75% Gamay.
