François
Charpentier
François
Charpentier comes from a farming family, although his father planted a few
rows of vines in 1950 in order to make wine for home consumption. The
wines are produced on the farm, a 300 hectare estate situated on the road
to Saint-Pierre-de-Jards. Since starting on the farm in 1970, François
has built up his vineyard holdings to ten hectares in preparation for his
son, Géraud, who joined his father in 2008 after studying agronomy in
Tours and Bordeaux and spending a year in Australia, which included
working the 2008 harvest at Leeuwin Estate in Margaret River.
The vines are all situated in the commune of Reuilly, split between the lieux-dits
of ‘Sablon’, ‘Les Ferrières’ and ‘Les Châtillons’. Their
five hectares of Sauvignon, 3.5ha of Pinot Noir and 1.5ha of Pinot Gris
are all fermented and raised in fibre-glass tanks, with one wine being
produced for each variety. The 2009s, all tasted in bottle at the farm in
May 2010, followed a similar style; light, delicate and very fresh with
the Pinot Noir being particularly commendable. These are certainly worth
seeking out.
