Bernard
Aujas has been making wine since 1988, although his father - a céréalier
with 130 hectares of land - did make a little wine for family consumption.
He moved his production to the Chai de Reuilly when the cellar opened its
doors in 1993.
The 5.5 hectares of vines are split between the communes of Lazenay, where
Bernard is mayor, and those in the lieux-dits
of ‘Les Enaudes’ and ‘Laleuf’ in Reuilly. Despite having 3.5
hectares of Sauvignon, his reputation is for the light, early drinking
Pinot Noir, which is derived from some of the sandier soils of the
appellation. The half an hectare of Pinot Gris is hand harvested; the
vines predate mechanization and are trained too low for the harvester.
Aujas sells mostly to local private clients and restaurants, but
occasionally moves some of his production through one or two Loire négociants,
so his wines are little seen outside of the Berry. There are three wines
produced; the 2009s (tasted at the Chai de Reuilly in May 2010) were
perfectly decent, although one can understand why he has a dedicated
following for his Reuilly rouge.
