Mathieu
Tijou, Château de l'Eperonniere (2008)
Part
of the great Anjou
wine dynasty, Mathieu is the youngest son of Pierre-Yves Tijou who, until
December 2007, was the owner of Château Soucherie in Chaume. The family
had bought and planted a small parcel of La Croix Picot in around 2001,
although the resulting wine had never been either bottled or released.
Prior to the sale of Soucherie, the 1.5 hectares of vines at La Croix Picot were sold
separately to Mathieu who made his first vintage in 2007.
The
Savennières is made at Château de l'Eperonniere, a twenty hectare
property on the plateau above Rochefort in the heart of the Coteaux du
Layon. His other wines, which include Anjou Rouge, Rosé de la Loire,
Coteaux du Layon and sparkling wines, are bought in and sold under his own
label.
2009
'La Croix Picot'
Deep appearance; distinctly yellow-gold. High toned nose with a powerful
menthol character. This is completely smoothered by oak which dries out
any fruit. Falls short with just the impression of acidity carrying the
finish. (02/11)
2007
'La Croix Picot'
Ten months ageing with 20% in tank and the rest being barrel fermented
with the malolactic blocked. Authentic mineral and slatey nose. Clean and
proper. Creamy behind with some quince. Soft, open and attractive with
lovely balance and very good focus. There is a fine mineral thread running
through the wine. Linear and persistent. Juicy. Very good and shows future
promise. This should evolve further. (02/10)
